Why are you starting this blog again? Why? Where's the logic? Do you even have time to blog? Yeah. Turns out, I do.
It's not a question of having time, but more a process of finding time. It's important. I feel like I used to think. I used to write. I used to blog at the same time as being totally swamped with projects. The weren't always work for hire. Sometimes, I just made myself crazy with my own stuff. Honestly, I was happier and more creative. I read my old posts and actually like this guy.
So yeah. There's no real destination here. There's no final goal. There's no Bigfoot at the end of this episode. But I still want to wander around in the woods for a little while...Mr. Socialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15538885380006128711noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15335157.post-14548067204438501492016-03-31T20:56:00.002-07:002016-04-24T20:16:24.736-07:00Gorilla Face Test for Animation<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwqix48TKsS5fdgn-OXYF3-_w8aBNsUvnEG4w6V4XiXL5kYFk-KqTKOKi67uxUd-7H8nqUjxKQG5cC9lhmwSoWIq6cQ7mZuICCoa-013qSVZAYx-v-N2c8PHulRnoKFjsdQ9Yj/s1600/GORILLA.gif" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwqix48TKsS5fdgn-OXYF3-_w8aBNsUvnEG4w6V4XiXL5kYFk-KqTKOKi67uxUd-7H8nqUjxKQG5cC9lhmwSoWIq6cQ7mZuICCoa-013qSVZAYx-v-N2c8PHulRnoKFjsdQ9Yj/s320/GORILLA.gif" /></a>Mr. Socialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15538885380006128711noreply@blogger.com54tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15335157.post-20168952035886070962014-04-20T12:39:00.000-07:002014-04-20T12:39:30.504-07:00A new logoPosting a new logo.

It's promotion for a 4 part stand-up comedy series held by the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena. I absolutely admire the fact that they are trying to make this event happen. It's great for the community to have events like this going on, but something is really wrong with this poster (and the other printed materials promoting this event).
This poster is not good. It really just looks thrown together.
A huge part of promoting an event (from a design standpoint) is making people believe you actually care about your own event! This poster does NOTHING to convince me that the designer (and the venue) care about making this event successful.
If you are having a Garage Sale or you are looking for a lost pet, just about any flyer/poster design is fine. But if you expect the public in general to take you seriously, you need to seriously consider hiring an artist or designer to give your promotional pieces a good look!
Just for laughs, I threw together another poster using many of the same elements and info, to give you an idea of what it could look like...

Jamestown Community College has recently gone through a "rebranding" with new logos for the college itself, and for the sports teams on the Jamestown and Olean campuses. For the most part the new logos are successful, but what is it about the Olean Jaguar that they just can't grasp?
For many years, the blue, black and white logo for the jaguars was the hideous sock puppet shown in the image. Although the new jaguar is an improvement from the old design, I can't help but feel they still missed the mark again. The silhouette of the new logo isn't remotely cat-like. The snout on the mascot is too long and narrow like a canine or hyena. It's expression is a little vague too. I threw together a quick jaguar with the same general logo treatment, just to compare. With a little more time and effort, I would simplify the spots and details to make it less illustration and more graphic.
What happened? It's hard to say, but I have found that sometimes graphic designers get caught in the stylization of logos and lose those aspects of the image that communicate its identity. The reverse is true sometimes too. Illustrators can get caught up in the details of an image and lose their way to a truly good logo. Somewhere between the two extremes is a great logo, but the new JCC Olean Jaguar just isn't great.Mr. Socialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15538885380006128711noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15335157.post-35417222281896176752013-02-14T09:39:00.001-08:002013-02-14T09:39:07.855-08:00I Don't Love You Too - 10,000 Maniacs<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="270" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/zvf1MoVWsLQ" width="480"></iframe>Mr. Socialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15538885380006128711noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15335157.post-32334292467197298382012-09-29T22:37:00.001-07:002012-09-29T22:38:16.459-07:00The Last Few Strokes...So here we are, almost October and almost finished with the "California, Here We Come" mural. It is big.

With two more outdoor mural projects this season, it will be a race with the weather to the finish line.
Stay tuned...Mr. Socialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15538885380006128711noreply@blogger.com26tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15335157.post-77211228532026663112012-09-20T19:52:00.003-07:002012-09-20T19:54:52.167-07:00Where to Draw the Line...I am nearing the end of a monster sized project, and I was thinking about the time it took to do. Around the first week in August, we finally got the okay to begin a 1,600 square foot color "I Love Lucy" mural.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWKXJ8M0Vncbe3uzzl9xa6ULpCKK8ZwtwfbZx2v3xXl3TVjETTH426JOaPHK0jFD9m8lU0CSq0dOa5SBP3dqLnubRxu8qiinclkwF8IToZQ5QBZrmL9vQ9tcIRVqo1HzZw4uuf/s1600/MURAL_photo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear:left; float:left;margin-right:1em; margin-bottom:1em"><img border="0" height="299" width="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWKXJ8M0Vncbe3uzzl9xa6ULpCKK8ZwtwfbZx2v3xXl3TVjETTH426JOaPHK0jFD9m8lU0CSq0dOa5SBP3dqLnubRxu8qiinclkwF8IToZQ5QBZrmL9vQ9tcIRVqo1HzZw4uuf/s400/MURAL_photo.JPG" /></a></div>
We certainly could have finished it more quickly, but there was some rain and a few other distractions during the process. The distractions were a few minor projects done for some clients, portraits and an interesting local sidewalk chalk drawing festival. Last Saturday (a day when mural painting was ideal) I took a day off and created a 62 foot long forced perspective piece of Michelangelo's "David" on a section of sidewalk.
From the reverse angle it looked like this...
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

...but when viewed from the other end it looked like...

It was a great weekend. Over the span of this mural, I have also worked on a ton of freelance projects, and I started to wonder "How much work is too much?"
I guess for everyone, the answer may be different, but I for one am excited to wake up every morning, knowing I have a ridiculous amount of things to accomplish. As a busy artist, I think the best place to draw the line, is where ever the next one goes.Mr. Socialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15538885380006128711noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15335157.post-4271799913479442252012-03-15T18:46:00.005-07:002012-03-15T18:59:00.790-07:00SPRINGY...<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikifsAIM-UGMBqMJ2cnZc3jS6ncm3Kmadh0nUPufLURZKCrfgqfT6vUOVjQ2NhCMgvlSa8Pv6xLiSwuodqlc8t5FbkZhOmdBBE7GlashkGVvbyRHXeygbSmTVJOkeMkKl_NymC/s1600/magritte.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 324px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikifsAIM-UGMBqMJ2cnZc3jS6ncm3Kmadh0nUPufLURZKCrfgqfT6vUOVjQ2NhCMgvlSa8Pv6xLiSwuodqlc8t5FbkZhOmdBBE7GlashkGVvbyRHXeygbSmTVJOkeMkKl_NymC/s400/magritte.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5720308088380127250" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6NQEh94Es3faDFBiwjCtvnLBp4WB2oz9aY6dpGg1HXMrER-VZZjZBLsGHM-293I3PKXs_DaWR6S45oLjr5lIuzXRHlIpNAR2e0J51FG87m8XW8KRXlf7V33GfHQNyNhf7Dg01/s1600/Screen+shot+2012-03-15+at+2.26.25+AM.png"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 259px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6NQEh94Es3faDFBiwjCtvnLBp4WB2oz9aY6dpGg1HXMrER-VZZjZBLsGHM-293I3PKXs_DaWR6S45oLjr5lIuzXRHlIpNAR2e0J51FG87m8XW8KRXlf7V33GfHQNyNhf7Dg01/s400/Screen+shot+2012-03-15+at+2.26.25+AM.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5720308092512937170" /></a><br /><br />So an uncharacteristically mild winter in western New York has given way to an unusually early and warm spring!<br /><br />Here's a design for the Infinity Performing Arts Spring showcase.<br /><br />I was looking at a bunch of Magritte paintings this week and became inspired. <br />Well, the Lucille Ball 100th Birthday Celebration Weekend came and went and was a big hit... and speaking of big hits... here comes hockey season.
<br />
<br />My friends at Chautauqua Sign Company here in Jamestown, called me up with a rush job. The junior hockey league team needs a graphic wrap for their road bus.
<br />
<br />This is pending client approval.

I just got back from watching the new Dreamworks film "How to Train your Dragon." I give it high marks.<br /><br />I am lucky enough to have a 7 year old in my house so I see a lot of animated movies. As an artist, I would be seeing many of these films anyway, but there's a stigma attached to animation. I feel like I owe someone an apology or and explanation when I see one. The truth is I do not, but there's always that feeling that I am being judged. Judging other people is something I try very hard NOT to do, so maybe I am hypersensitive to being on the receiving end. I don't know, but at any rate, I feel guilty for liking these movies sometimes. Guilty of what? I'm really not 100% sure. Does being a creative person make you less of a grown up? I think it does, but not really in a negative way.<br /><br />Let's face it... there are only two kinds of people in the world: Creative people and those who have forgotten that they are. I pity them. I really do. It's like someone carved their insides out and left nothing but bitter hateful bile inside of them. I really think we all have a creative side, but the majority of people dismiss it. They just do. I'm not sure why.<br /><br />I had an ugly exchange with a person very close to me this week in which some of my art was referred to as "...your effing stupid cartoons." Artists grow and get better by working. There's not always a piece of paper or a degree which officially records their achievements and failures. The greatest teacher to an artist is the work itself, and growing and getting better is a personal journey for everyone, but especially creative people.<br /><br />Part of what always makes me crazy when I go to see a film like Dreamworks' "Dragon," is that it serves as proof. Proof that somewhere, artists are assembling, working and succeeding en mass, despite the venom of those that judge them. Sometimes I feel like an alien. I feel lately like it's time to get on the mother ship and bail on this outpost. It would feel good to be among others who "get it," for a while, instead stranded here in this outpost almost alone.Mr. Socialhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15538885380006128711noreply@blogger.com1
