Well, the Lucille Ball 100th Birthday Celebration Weekend came and went and was a big hit... and speaking of big hits... here comes hockey season.

My friends at Chautauqua Sign Company here in Jamestown, called me up with a rush job. The junior hockey league team needs a graphic wrap for their road bus.

Dragons and Aliens

Movies affect different people in different ways. I just got back from watching the new Dreamworks film "How to Train your Dragon." I give it high marks.

I am lucky enough to have a 7 year old in my house so I see a lot of animated movies. As an artist, I would be seeing many of these films anyway, but there's a stigma attached to animation. I feel like I owe someone an apology or and explanation when I see one. The truth is I do not, but there's always that feeling that I am being judged. Judging other people is something I try very hard NOT to do, so maybe I am hypersensitive to being on the receiving end. I don't know, but at any rate, I feel guilty for liking these movies sometimes. Guilty of what? I'm really not 100% sure. Does being a creative person make you less of a grown up? I think it does, but not really in a negative way.

Let's face it... there are only two kinds of people in the world: Creative people and those who have forgotten that they are. I pity them. I really do. It's like someone carved their insides out and left nothing but bitter hateful bile inside of them. I really think we all have a creative side, but the majority of people dismiss it. They just do. I'm not sure why.

I had an ugly exchange with a person very close to me this week in which some of my art was referred to as "...your effing stupid cartoons." Artists grow and get better by working. There's not always a piece of paper or a degree which officially records their achievements and failures. The greatest teacher to an artist is the work itself, and growing and getting better is a personal journey for everyone, but especially creative people.

Part of what always makes me crazy when I go to see a film like Dreamworks' "Dragon," is that it serves as proof. Proof that somewhere, artists are assembling, working and succeeding en mass, despite the venom of those that judge them. Sometimes I feel like an alien. I feel lately like it's time to get on the mother ship and bail on this outpost. It would feel good to be among others who "get it," for a while, instead stranded here in this outpost almost alone.

Getting geared up to teach again! Really looking forward to working with the Infinity Performing Arts Organization. I taught a quick introduction class a week or so ago and it was very cool.

One thing that sets Infinity apart from other teaching situations that I have participated in, is that the students WANT to be there. I can't tell you how much better that makes any class... as an instructor of a teacher. On both side of the "desk" a willing group is a group that learns. The concept of "No Child Left Behind" flies directly in the face of this concept, which is why I have always hated it.

Information and education isn't something given to you. You have to take it. You have to want it. As a teacher, you have to want to share it too. The desire to learn and get better is the real skill everyone must learn to achieve great things, and when the instructor wants to teach, and the students want to learn everything else is awesome!

My friend Susan is very nice. She is the kind of person who makes you happy that you ran into her. "Hi Susan!"

Susan is as familiar as the sun every morning, and as mysterious as the moon on a misty night. You feel as if you know her, even though she is just an acquaintance. Susan does the same things just about everyone else does, but there's a strange amazingness to these things when Susan does them. I can't put my finger on it, but it seems like you are watching someone do something for the first time, every time she says, or does something.

She can't be from planet Earth. There's something very real about her... too real sometimes. I think about her and wonder. Then I fall asleep.

Mort Drucker and the advent of technology...

There's a website that's really worth checking out. I've blogged before about artist Bobby Chiu and his digital painting videos. His website (www.schoolism.com) is a real education for artists. I have yet to enroll in any of the classes, but since I have started watching this site and the videos posted there, I've started digital painting myself. I think I am getting the hang of this...

About 3 weeks ago I caught a video on the site and it really started me thinking. Character designer, Stephen Silver posted a video of a visit he had with Mort Drucker in Mort's home and studio. Mort Drucker is one of my heroes from the pages and several covers of MAD Magazine.

Anyway, in watching the video, I saw something that made me think. At one point, as Stephen Silver is interviewing, Mort starts to sketch in pencil. Then he does something that I haven't done in almost 10 years. Mort Drucker takes out a pen to start inking his illustration and dips it in ink. DIPS IT IN ACTUAL INK.

I've been working with computers a lot, and although I still prefer to sketch almost everything in pencil first, it never occured to me to go back to the old quill style ink pen. So tonight, as I was sketching a character for an upcoming animation, I broke out the pen and ink. There is something to be said for this technique. As I prepare to teach a few art classes this early spring, I'm glad Mort Drucker is still teaching me things.

Excessive Force... the sequel

A few months ago I put on an art exhibit of Star Wars paintings and sold a few. Well, the remaining paintings are now on display at Rider's Cup coffee, and they are generating more interest! I have sold another and there's been a few inquiries too on a few other pieces. I will be hanging the remainder of the show tomorrow and it should be up until the January first.

In the mean time, I just can't leave well enough alone. Here's a sketch for another... I think it might sell to the right buyer...

I have been watching a ton of videos on YouTube on digital painting and decided it was time to relent and try it. If you have ever tried to "paint" in Photoshop with a mouse, the results can be very frustrating and basically bad.

I started watching a lot of Bobby Chiu videos. I have mentioned him in my blog posts before. Bobby is a Toronto artist whose Zen like video narrating style can inspire almost any artist. I am thinking about taking an online course in digital painting from him at schoolism.com... check him out.

However, if you have a graphics tablet I encourage you to give it a try. I was surprised at the very painterly results and played for hours. This is my first stab at a digital painting. Call it a sketch...

Well, "The Producers" has come and gone. It was a great run. Everyone associated with the production did a great job. I got caught up in the whole thing. It was amazing.

Part of the very last props created for the production were a series of theatrical posters from Max Bialystock's former lackluster stage plays.

This provided me with an opportunity to include some of the "behind the scenes" faces including the Director of the Orchestra, the Director, the Assistant, and the Technical Director. I never posted them so, here they are...

I pencil sketched this one a week ago or so and just cleaned it up tonight so it'll be ready for the crew to start on in the morning.

Shooting Clay Pigeons

Yeah... I know bad joke... right? This is the sculpt for the pigeon puppets for the upcoming production of "The Producers" at Jamestown Community College. Since we have to actually create 10+ individual puppets, it's worth the extra effort to create a mold and mass produce these rats with wings.

I'll be creating a mold out of good ol' plaster of paris in two halves. The final puppet will be latex and flexible. No wings yet as they will be added later as part of the inner mechanism of the puppet. A little more smoothing of the body and we should be ready to create the mold.

In case anyone is wondering... this guy's body is part styrofoam with clay on top of it. I took a half-sphere of green floral foam and glued it to a regular white styro cone and then v-cut the point of the cone off to form the part of the pigeon which befouls statues.

Um, this is a logo for a dance supply company that caters to religious dancers, I think. That's as much as I can tell from the details I got on this job. Anyway, it's off to the client now to see if they like it.

"The Producers" theatre district drop is done!

I'll get some better pics of this later when the lights are all in place, but here's a sneak peek.

An unbelievable crew of painters showed up Saturday afternoon and banged out this backdrop with me and Chloe. EVERYONE worked hard and fast! After a few touch ups on Sunday, this backdrop hopped back on the pipe and was hoisted back into place.

It was a good day, and I could not have done it without the whole crew. Amazing.

Theatre Backdrops for "THE PRODUCERS"

Well... it's theatre season, and that means once again the local community college needs some backdrops for their next production. Painting begins this weekend and sketching begins tomorrow (sketching on a grand scale that is). The designs are done at this point. There's something vaguely Chuck Jones-esque about these. They are a little cartoony and I think that works for a show like Mel Brooks's "The Producers."

These designs are based VERY closely on the original Broadway production from the St. James.

There's a few more drops, but these are the main ones used throughout the show. This is gonna be a fun one. Stayed tuned for updates...

A design for this year's Local Music Showcase. In the heyday of Soviet propaganda posters, they churned out some amazingly beautiful art. I love the industrial hard edged look of these. So, if it worked in industrial era Russia and China, I thought it might work in post-industrial era Jamestown, NY. Yes, the factory stacks are smokeless. It seems lately, the only thing we are manufacturing locally is some great music.

I got a call yesterday from my friend Dave. He's one of the people I met during "Peter Pan" at Jamestown Community College last year. Anyway, Dave said he was building 2 set pieces for Romeo and Juliet, and he saw my poster and liked the color scheme. He said he had 2 doorways and wanted my opinion on how to decorate them a little. I went in this morning and painted these. Quick and simple. Thanks Dave.

When? Right friggin' now. It's time now. It's always time right now, and it's always the right time. It might be the right time to wait which doesn't mean the time is wrong now. It just means the time is right to wait. It's always right to be right, but it's best to be right, right now. Then is a joke. Don't worry about then. By then it will too late. Then what?

Why? Because. Do you need more? Really? Okay... because it needs to be. If you are asking why there needs to be a because, even if it stands around all by itself uncomfortably, then I can't explain it. I cringe at the thought of things I might have missed if I hung around looking for words to accompany "because." More often than not, because is enough.

Thoughts on another art show...

I've been kicking around an idea for some time now about what the next art show/series of paintings should be. I want to do something local, and Jamestown architecture has some real character. However, I started to think about what "makes" a place, or gives it an identity. Why is one place different from another? I came to the personal conclusion that what makes a place great, is the people. Not your family. Your family is always "there for you" whether you live next door, or across the planet. The same can be said about your friends. There's another series of paintings wrapped up in family and friends, but I think my next series is going to be something a little different.

The next show will feature a series of portraits of some of my favorite people doing what they do. What does that mean? Well, I want to paint people working, bartenders, batistas, clerks and cashiers. I love them. They need portraits. There's plenty of praise for heroes of the death defying variety, but I want to do something smaller and a little more personal. I dunno. Maybe it's a crazy idea. Maybe that's why I like it. Maybe that will make me want to do it even more. Studs Terkel with a paintbrush. Time to start sketching again.
