Sometimes Cliché is Okay

When faced with an illustration assignment in which you have NO source material, sometimes you have to improvise. This cover was for a FALL ART GUIDE, or some crap. I take full responsibility for employing the COMPLETELY cliché artist's palette. Sometimes the challenge with an over-used visual device, is to reinvent it in some way. I love concepts. This one... isn't really a stretch, but I think it gets there safely.

The execution on this was a bit rushed, but it works. I like the way the rake mimics a fan brush.

Sometimes an illustrator is just someone who creates a concept and "LEAVES."

Stupid

Decisions... sometimes they seem so insignificant and later they prove to be life changing. Still others seems so important and later prove to be complete bullshit.

There's no way to tell the difference. Flip a coin.

Try to do the right thing, be strong and stick to your guns. What else can anyone do?

Sleep.

Covered and Tooned and Sicked

What do you do to trick people into reading something, or in the case of a free alt weekly publication, at least pick it up?

Though an interview with former Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders does not scream smashing cover, it becomes the concept that will sell the story. I don't know how effective this will be, but it will hopefully pique interest.

Another toon... and I am nursing a horrible cold.
