Some House Keeping...

Well, "The Producers" has come and gone. It was a great run. Everyone associated with the production did a great job. I got caught up in the whole thing. It was amazing.

Part of the very last props created for the production were a series of theatrical posters from Max Bialystock's former lackluster stage plays.

This provided me with an opportunity to include some of the "behind the scenes" faces including the Director of the Orchestra, the Director, the Assistant, and the Technical Director. I never posted them so, here they are...

Old Bavaria... the Alpine Drop

Well... it's far to early in the morning to be up blogging, but I just finished the design for the last drop for "The Producers" and I thought I would throw it up.

I pencil sketched this one a week ago or so and just cleaned it up tonight so it'll be ready for the crew to start on in the morning.

Casting Pigeons for the Role...

Here's the mummified pigeon encased in plaster. The mold is only half done because the plaster needs to fully cure before you can cast the other half of the mold. Looks like maybe tomorrow will be part 2...

Shooting Clay Pigeons

Yeah... I know bad joke... right? This is the sculpt for the pigeon puppets for the upcoming production of "The Producers" at Jamestown Community College. Since we have to actually create 10+ individual puppets, it's worth the extra effort to create a mold and mass produce these rats with wings.

I'll be creating a mold out of good ol' plaster of paris in two halves. The final puppet will be latex and flexible. No wings yet as they will be added later as part of the inner mechanism of the puppet. A little more smoothing of the body and we should be ready to create the mold.

In case anyone is wondering... this guy's body is part styrofoam with clay on top of it. I took a half-sphere of green floral foam and glued it to a regular white styro cone and then v-cut the point of the cone off to form the part of the pigeon which befouls statues.

UPTOWN for "The Producers"

This past weekend was a busy one. The (slightly smaller) crew finished another backdrop for the upcoming production of "The Producers" this past Sunday. Awesome work. Paint was flying by 8:30 PM, but we got it done! Here's a few photos...

I'll get some better pics of this later when the lights are all in place, but here's a sneak peek.



An unbelievable crew of painters showed up Saturday afternoon and banged out this backdrop with me and Chloe. EVERYONE worked hard and fast! After a few touch ups on Sunday, this backdrop hopped back on the pipe and was hoisted back into place.

It was a good day, and I could not have done it without the whole crew. Amazing.

Theatre Backdrops for "THE PRODUCERS"

Well... it's theatre season, and that means once again the local community college needs some backdrops for their next production. Painting begins this weekend and sketching begins tomorrow (sketching on a grand scale that is). The designs are done at this point. There's something vaguely Chuck Jones-esque about these. They are a little cartoony and I think that works for a show like Mel Brooks's "The Producers."

These designs are based VERY closely on the original Broadway production from the St. James.

There's a few more drops, but these are the main ones used throughout the show. This is gonna be a fun one. Stayed tuned for updates...
